When thatching in reed it is usual to strip off all the old thatch right back to the battens.

The reeds are pushed into place by hand

Then a legett is used to level the reeds .A wood or metal sway and thatching spikes (nails) are used to hold the reeds on to the roof.

The tops of the reed have to be cut off before the ridge can go on.

Norfolk Reed has a harder sharper appearance,It is very hard wearing and lasts around 60 years.
