We have grown our own straw for many yearsThe varieties are normally Maris Widgeon or Maris Huntsman. The straw is cut with a binder as above.
The old threshing team above are left to right: Jack Clark, Ernest Mizon(Grandfather), John Brown, & Bill Mizon (Father).
By growing our own straw we know how much fertiliser and fungicide has been applied, we grow an old variety of wheat which is tall and hollow. The straw is cut very young when it is still a bit greenish. It is threshed with old machinery.
